McDowell Democratic Party May Newsletter

McDowell Democrats experienced an emotional rollercoaster since our last newsletter. We were inspired by the turnout at our first in-person monthly business meeting in two years, on May 23rd.

Mother Nature brought torrential downpours and lightning all day but our faithful still braved the elements to be there. We also attracted several newbies eager to volunteer. Enthusiasm was in the air.

Our happiness disappeared the next day when we received the news from Uvalde, Texas that 38 people had been shot, killing 19 children and 2 teachers. This was after 10 African Americans had been shot to death in a racially motivated massacre the week before.

Michelle Price, MCDP Chair, demonstrated real leadership by organizing a non-political candlelight vigil on May 31st. A diverse crowd including many local dignitaries, gathered on the McDowell Courthouse lawn to honor and remember those who perished or were hurt.

It was a fitting but somber ceremony. The sad observance served as another reminder of why we need to work extra hard to elect Democrats.
