Letter to the editor concerning school board
McDowell News: 12.09.24
To the Editor:
We are worried about what is happening in our schools. The McDowell County Board of Education seems to focus on one religion and ignore others. This is not fair or right.
In America, people should be free to have different beliefs. Our Constitution says that schools cannot promote one religion over another. Lately, the board has banned some books that seem to teach only one way of thinking. Our children need help to learn to think for themselves or respect others who may believe differently.
Our community includes people from many backgrounds and beliefs. By only focusing on one religion, the board makes others feel left out. Every child and family should feel welcome in our schools, no matter their beliefs.
Also, banning books takes away important ideas and stories. Schools should help kids learn about the world and different people, not hide things from them. Education is about learning and growing, not closing off minds.
We call on the McDowell County Board of Education to change its approach. Schools should treat everyone fairly and help kids learn about all kinds of people and ideas.
Sincerely,
The Officers of the McDowell County Democratic Party
