Keep McDowell County Schools Inclusive and Constitutional

Letter to the Editor: Keep Public Schools Inclusive and Constitutional

The McDowell County Democratic Party calls on the McDowell County Board of Commissioners and the McDowell County School Board to uphold the U.S. Constitution by keeping Christian-targeted prayer out of our public schools.

The First Amendment clearly states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...” This means our government, including public schools, must remain neutral on matters of religion, ensuring that no particular faith is promoted over others.

A moment of silence is a respectful and inclusive way to honor the diverse beliefs of all students and staff, allowing for personal reflection or prayer without imposing a specific religion. We urge our leaders to respect this constitutional principle and foster an environment that is welcoming for all.

Sincerely,
Susan Elliott

Chair, McDowell County Democratic Party
