GOP Needs to Listen to the American People
Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my concern over the recent reports that a bipartisan deal on border security and aid to Ukraine and Israel is in jeopardy because of former President Donald Trump’s influence on the Republican Party. These reports suggest that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell is backing away from the compromise he helped craft, fearing that it would undermine Trump’s chances of winning the 2024 election against President Joe Biden.
This is a shameful betrayal of the national interest and the American people, who deserve a secure border, a strong ally in Ukraine, and a stable partner in Israel. The deal that McConnell and other senators have been working on for months would achieve these goals, by providing $13.6 billion for border security, $60 billion for Ukraine, and $14 billion for Israel, as well as making changes to immigration policy to discourage illegal migration.
The deal is not perfect, and it requires concessions from both sides, but it is a reasonable and responsible solution to some of the most urgent challenges facing our country and the world. It is also supported by a majority of Americans, according to recent polls, who want Congress to work together and solve problems, rather than play partisan games and cater to the whims of a disgraced and divisive former president.
I urge McConnell and other Republican senators to put country over party and support the border security and aid package. It is time to stop listening to Trump, and start listening to the American people.
Sincerely,
Marty Elliott
