I implore our county commissioners to sign the upcoming Equity Statement
Letter to the editor, I am writing to implore our county commissioners to sign the upcoming Equity Statement to be presented by the West Marion Community Forum. This statement, which upholds equity for all individuals, is crucial for fostering unity and respect in McDowell County.
It is essential for us, as members of McDowell County, to recognize and respect the different cultures and lived experiences within our community. Every person in our community deserves to live without fear and have equal opportunities.
It is important to remind our commissioners of their oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States, as they all swore on the Bible. In 2018, however, they utilized that same Bible as a defense to discriminate against individuals based on their sexual orientation. It is urgent to note that the Supreme Court ruled in June 2020 that sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination are prohibited under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
By signing the Equity Statement, our commissioners can demonstrate their commitment to creating a fair and just McDowell County that respects the rights and dignity of all its residents. Let us come together to ensure that equity becomes a cornerstone of our community, fostering a future where everyone can thrive.
