After a delay due to litigation about which candidates would appear on ballots, Military and Overseas Absentee Ballots will go out today.

41st Annual Mountain Glory Festival
Join Democrats, Quilters, Musicians, and others for the 41st Annual Mountain Glory Festival. On Saturday, October 12, 2024, Main Street will be crowded with craft booths, food trucks, information stations, fun, and games all day. Check here for more information about the schedule. The quilt show will be at the McDowell Arts and Crafts Association. Notice the painted quilt blocks on various buildings and drop into many of the stores and restaurants that are regular favorites of our mountain city. Stay later than 10 p.m. at some of our local hangouts for food, fun, and festivities.

County Commission Meeting
The County Commission ordinarily meets at five p.m. on the second Monday of each Month and at 11:30 a.m. on the third Monday. Exceptions are noted in the schedule. The first October meeting is at 4 p.m. at the Carson House. The 5 p.m. November 18 meeting is the only meeting that month. The December meetings are on the first and third Mondays.

First Mail-in Absentee Ballots will be Mailed Out
If you have signed up to receive your vote-by-mail absentee ballot, today is the first day that ballots will be mailed. You can sign up here. Be sure to read the instructions carefully. Two witnesses must sign and include their addresses. In addition, you must include either a photocopy of your qualifying picture ID or a statement about why you couldn’t include it. Kamala Harris Women’s Rights Drop-in
Bring the children! Bring the men! Celebrate Kamala Harris’s candidacy on the day the 19th Amendment of the US Constitution was ratified in 1920, granting women the right to vote.
Kamala Harris stickers will be available for a small donation. A Kamala Harris video will be playing. Women’s history, children’s books, and magazines will be available for educational viewing.
Smell the Coffee! Donate to McDems for Democratic Headquarters
We need your financial support this time. We don’t have enough to rent and insure our Democratic Headquarters Building in Old Fort. Donate $55.14 or more to be eligible for a $50.00 gift certificate for Coffee! (Smell the coffee!) One certificate will be for Ingenious Coffee, and one will be for the Seeker Coffee Shop. Get your donation in by noon Monday to be eligible for the drawing! The drawing will be held during the monthly Democratic Party meeting on Monday evening.

CNN Presidential Debate
President Joe Biden will square off against former President Donald Trump starting at 9pm on CNN.
Jake Tapper and Dana Bash will moderate the debate. A second debate is planned for September.
It is unclear whether Robert F Kennedy will join Biden and Trump on stage or not.
